Starting your own business? I started a service company and struggled my first year. I had a solid business plan and I did everything that I “should” have done. At the end of my first year, I was staring at a huge loss. I could not understand how I could be failing. I listened to everyone, I purchased over $1,000 in promotional products and passed them out, I bought radio time and put ads in the paper. Why was my business dying?

The world today is changing and if you want your business to stay competitive, you have to change with it. The old ways of marketing don’t work for today’s small and medium businesses. You need to find fresh new ways that don’t cost a lot of money, yet still get great results! You need to think outside of the box and use your marketing dollars more effectively.

My partner and I got together at the end of the first year and discussed what was happening. We knew we needed to do something different or we would be closing the doors after our second year. We went to the internet for help and we were very disappointed. All we found were things like, “understand your strengths”, “Identify your target customers” or even worse: send me $500 and take my “Getting Customers” course!

We got back together again after a few weeks of thinking it through independently. Sitting in his backyard, we just were quiet and depressed for a bit. We looked at each other and said, “Look, we are two smart and energetic guys.
